Attractions in Dambulla, Sri Lanka

Dambulla is a small, peaceful town about two hours south of Kandy in Sri Lanka. It’s a great starting point for visiting the nearby historical sites and national parks. Furthermore, Dambulla is significantly less expensive than Sigiriya, which is close by and famous for the Lion Rock Fortress. Here are all the fantastic things to do within an hour’s drive to Dambulla.

Attractions in Dambulla

Dambulla may not be the best place to stay in Sri Lanka, but it does have a lot of attractions to offer. Spend a night or two here and visit the following sights throughout the day.

The Sigiriya Lion Rock
One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic attractions is the Lion Rock at Sigiriya. It’s a large 200-meter-high rocky outcropping with a fortification on it. You’ll need around half a day to see this UNESCO World Heritage site because the trek to the top is challenging. The Lion Rock is a 30-minute drive from Dambulla. Dambulla is a popular overnight destination for travelers because the lodgings are substantially less expensive.
Pidurangala is a rock formation in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Pidurangala Rock is a renowned tourist destination. To get the best perspective of Sigiriya Lion Rock, climb Pidurangala Rock, which is close to it. From the peak, you’ll have a spectacular view of Lion Rock because they’re directly opposite each other.

Dambulla Cave Temple and Museum is a Buddhist temple and museum in Dambulla, Sri Lanka

In Dambulla, Sri Lanka, there is a cave temple and museum called Dambulla Cave Temple and Museum. Dambulla’s cave temple is particularly well-known. A large cave network houses over 100 Buddha sculptures, making this a treasured sacred place. Murals and paintings that are incredibly complex and brilliant embellish the caverns as well.

Avukana Buddha Statue

Avukana Buddha, about an hour’s drive from Dambulla, is a standing Buddha statue. The figure was carved out of a large granite boulder and measures over 12 meters tall. Because of its remote location, the Avukana Buddha statue is frequently visited by locals rather than tourists. It is strongly advised that you combine your visit with a tour to the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress.

Yapahuwa Fortress is a fortress in Yapahuwa, Sri Lanka.
With few to no tourists, Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, a 100-meter-high rock known as one of medieval Sri Lanka’s capitals, is an excellent alternative to Sigiriya Lion Rock. Yapahuwa was a fortress with both internal and external walls. The Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relic was found in Yapahuwa and is now placed in Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth.

Minneriya National Park
Wildlife abounds in Sri Lanka’s national parks. Minneriya National Park is home to elephant herds, monkeys, and a variety of beautiful birds. As a result, a Dambulla jeep safari is a fantastic option.
Safaris can be arranged at your hotel or guesthouse as well as at Dambulla. The entrance to Minneriya National Park is 30 minutes away by car.
The Best Route to Dambulla
Dambulla can be reached via a variety of routes. Dambulla is best reached by train, bus, or car from Kandy. By rail, you may reach the city center in 2 hours.
